Advanced German - Movie Talk
A DVD-ROM program for Mac or Windows that allows you to watch and virtually participate in a German detective show ("Von Nagel zu Nagel"). See Macworld's review of an earlier version (June 2001) for more. From EuroTalk Interactive in the UK. Also see Talk Now! below.

Auralog's Tell Me More - German
A CD-ROM product from Auralog. Earlier, when I reviewed the intermediate version of Tell Me More - German for Windows, I commented that it was not aimed at beginners. Well, a newer version is, but this program has changed three times since my first review! You can also read my newer review of Version 6. All editions come with a headset/microphone. The Auralog programs offer an optional interactive "Internet Tutoring Service" via a personal tutor. From Auralog.

The Clicktionary
A software dictionary for Windows that lets you see definitions by clicking on-screen. For English to German and English to other languages: "Clicktionary Version 2.9 is a 'click and easy' translation tool which now supports English-to-German, English-to-Chinese, or English-to-Vietnamese!" From Cleverlearn.

German Products from Transparent Language
Language and translation software that includes A+ German, GermanNow, KidSpeak, German WordAce, and other German-language software (see below). From Transparent Languages.

German WordAce
The German WordAce "talking translation dictionary" for Mac or Windows lets you hear, as well as see, over 40,000 words in German. This CD-ROM package can be used in conjunction with email, word processing, Web and other programs. WordAce also provides verb conjugations and tenses. Not bad for a suggested retail price of $19.95. From Transparent Languages.

Global Traveler
This modestly priced multilingual software comes with a CD-ROM and a pocket translator. See my full review for more. For Windows and Mac.

KidSpeak 6-in-1 Languages
A CD-ROM program aimed at children 6 and up. Teaches six languages through games and songs: German, French, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. Uses an immersion method to teach about 700 words per language — with almost no English. A PC Magazine review rated an earlier version 3 out of 5 (good). By Transparent Language. For Mac and Windows.

Language Adventure I - Review
A close look at this above-average Instinct CD-ROM program for children and adults. A review by your Guide.

QuickDic
An English-German/German-English dictionary that can be used online or downloaded for use on your computer (for Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME, and XP). An updated database of "more than 230,000 words and idioms in each language" is available for download. Not bad, considering the dictionary is free!

Rosetta Stone - German
By Fairfield Language Technologies. Mac and PC. An extensive program for learning German—for schools, organizations, and individuals. The "Personal Edition" of the Rosetta Stone program (Level I) retails for $195.00. See my review of the more modest Global Traveler CD-ROM and pocket translator.

Talk Now! German
"Talk Now! (for Mac and Windows) is ideal for anyone over 10 years old wishing to improve listening, understanding and spoken language skills. The disc includes nine topics: first words, food, colours, phrases, parts of the body, numbers, time, shopping and countries. The games and quizzes included on the disc ensure that users have fun whilst using the disc without realising that they're learning." From EuroTalk Interactive in the UK.

WinFlash
A Windows (95-XP) software program for vocabulary in German and other languages. Also see HandyCards for PocketPC and Palm OS devices. Uses electronic "decks" of flashcards. Download the Basic edition for about $20 from Open Window. Also in more advanced versions. Free demo download and a 30-day evaluation period.

WordPoint German-English Dictionary
A foreign-language pop-up dictionary for translating words as you read a document. It is a single-word translator designed to help you decipher a word by simply placing the cursor over it. You hear the word (English only) and see a pop-up box with a translation. So, just how well does WordPoint do that for German? Read my full review.

World Talk German
A CD-ROM program for Mac or Windows aimed at intermediate level learners who have already built up some confidence listening and speaking German. Interactive games and quizzes help further develop fluency and understanding of the language. From EuroTalk Interactive in the UK.
